□ Speech 1

Yeong-Il Na(professor of Seoul National University)

☞ Thesis : UNESCO"s Traditional Sports & Games(TSG) and Martial Arts

Yeong-Il Na, a professor of Seoul National University, who first made his speech on UNESCO’s Traditional Sports and Games(TSG) and Martial Arts, reminded that the round-table conference on UNESCO’s Traditional Sports and Games was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in November, 2009, while looking back over the history of the International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport(MINEPS). Expressing his hope that TSG will be preserved as a kind of living culture as UNESCO calls for since it is a symbol showing the diversities of the Korean culture as an intangible heritage of each local community. Mr. Na insisted TSG requires the multifaced approach such as education, culture, environmental preservation, competitive sports through which new martial arts values can be created. In addition, he presented the formation and realization of the World’s Overall Martial Arts Contest as a practical challenge for it.

Q. What kinds of lectures related to martial arts are offered at the World Martial Arts Academy?

A. The World Martial Arts Academy intends to offer as many lectures related to martial arts across the world as possible by dividing them into theory subjects and practice ones. But I think we should secure good space circumstances, leaders, and supporting systems before opening those lectures.

Q. I want to know whether any course related to martial arts are offered in Chungju University, where the World Martial Arts Academy is located. In addition, what steps I should take in order to be admitted if I want to go to the university as a foreigner?

A. We want to first consult with the university as to whether the graduate school will be opened since the issue should be authorized by the university, and if everything goes well, we want to provide anyone in the world with an opportunity to study martial arts-related academic fields by opening majors related to global martial arts.

Q. What preparations are you making in order to enhance the global prestige of the World Martial Arts Academy?

A. In order to do so, The World Martial Arts Academy will make efforts to be registered as an advisory body to UNESCO and do activities, and correctly step up its academic status related to global martial arts. In addition, we will make preparations for establishing the World Martial Arts Museum in Chung-ju, a mecca of world martial arts.

Q. I understand that financial issues should be immediately dealt with if the World Martial Arts Academy is to firmly establish its global position. What measures will you take for that matter?

A. By means of continuous global activities, the World Martial Arts Academy has already been included in the list of organizations supported by the promotion assistance fund from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the relevant authorities in the South Korean government.

Q. What recognition papers do you issue for those who take part in The World Martial Arts Academy? For example, do you issue a kind of certificate?

A. We will issue a participation certificate for all the participants in the 2009 The World Martial Arts Academy Workshop.
