Okichitaw Indigenous Martial Arts
Program posted to the Canadian Best
Practices Portal
The Canadian Best Practices Initiative (CBPI) unit through the Public Health Agency of Canada (the Federal Government of Canada) has been deemed the “Okichitaw Indigenous Martial Arts Program” a “Tried and True Aboriginal Ways” intervention success, and thus has been posted to the Canadian Best Practices Portal (the ‘Portal).
The Portal’s intervention section assesses community and populationbased interventions according to a set of rigorous and welltested criteria. In order to be included on this Portal, an intervention must meet criteria related to evidence of impact, quality of evidence, adaptability, and credibility of source.
This developed martial arts program based on Cree combat manoeuvres and offered to urban Aboriginal adults since 1997 is said to be developed by George Lépine of the Okichitaw, which aims to empower students and strengthen mental and physical strength.
