Introduction |
NAKBABUKA is a traditional martial art of a community called Banyala from the Luyia tribe, the western part of Kenya. |
History |
This traditional martial art is performed in memory of a mythical beautiful lady called NAKHABUKA. Men wrestled with each other as women cheer them with songs and praise with drums and other instruments. The winner could take a girl because for a young man to marry a girl in this community, he must wrestle and win against his rival as girls always prefer being married by a strong man for protection. |
